Calhoun County is located between Detroit and Chicago in southern Michigan. Home to approximately 136,000 citizens, Calhoun County offers opportunity for rural and urban lifestyles. The seat of the county – or the administrative center- can be located in the city of Marshall, MI. Marshall is one of the three most populated areas within the county. The other two populated areas are found in the City of Albion and the City of Battle Creek – which also happens to be the county's largest metropolitan area.
Within Calhoun County, legal matters are dealt with in part by the Circuit Court and District Court. The district court system processes cases which are brought forth by law enforcement, private citizens and businesses. This court, located in Battle Creek, MI. hears all misdemeanor cases and may also conduct introductory assessments of felony cases. Within this court, all cases dealing with amounts under $25,000 dollars are heard, as well as all traffic infringements. There are six Judges which work within this court. All of them have been elected for terms of six years in a non-partisan election.
The other court within Calhoun County is the 37th Circuit Court, also located in Battle Creek. This court is comprised of four elected judges. The courts jurisdiction extends to all civil cases dealing with more than $25,000, all cases involving a criminal felony, and all divorce and paternity cases. This court will also handle appeals sent up from district court, probate court, and certain administrative agencies.
